So I already knew the the Bratz clothing would fit the Freya’s with varying success. I nabbed this outfit from Toys R Us yesterday because I thought it was cute enough for either Poe or Desma (it’ll ultimately end up being Poe’s because of those boots, though).
Things I discovered:
The arm holes on the shawl are small, but the Freya’s paws can be wiggled through them alright. Just carefully, is all.
The pants are just the slightest bit too small and won’t go over her hips. The black bit of fabric between the shawl and the jeans? That’s the black bathing suit/leotard I left on her. I think I’m going to seam rip the jeans and pick up some stretchy denim to make some new pants that actually fit.
THE SHOES. I guess some Bratz shoes require you to remove their feet, as there’s only a peg bit inside the shoes and not an actual, you know, foot part. This actually isn’t so bad. I removed the Freya’s paw feet and stuck the piece with the hook that keeps the feet on back to the elastic and then shoved her now peg feet into the boot and it looks great! However, I tried this method with the StarDoll shoes I have (which do have room for feet) and they don’t look nearly as good. Plus, it makes her taller!
Overall, not a bad choice for $7. Plus, I’ll get a pants pattern out of this, in a way, and I can make my girls some pants and leggings!

Yesterday, I went out with my fiance to a photoshoot for the local furry group and I brought along Desma because, well, anthro cat, furries, makes enough sense. I figured I could get a few nice daytime shots of her, since my room has weird lighting and the flash shines on her (she’s SO shiny for some reason). I tossed some warm weather clothes on her and took her around the riverwalk and got some shots.

I had a moment of confusion, because I couldn’t find anywhere pretty to take her picture. But then I realized, well, she’s not a ‘pretty’ character. So I scored by finding some cool rock outcroppings and dead brush to pose her in.

I’m not great with posing her, unfortunately, haha. She needs to be strung a little tighter and, well, after she was standing on the boulder above, she tipped forward and the concrete she fell on roughed up the tips of her ears. Nothing I can sand out a little, so I’m not too worried!

Poe showed up today! I discovered I need to string Desma tighter (or, well, I can string her tighter, because Poe is strung pretty snugly). I’ll probably spray them later this week when the weather is warmer (or maybe this evening, I dunno). I’m trying to brainstorm how to do all their markings and stuff, but I figure it’ll all be trial and error.

Haha, these are so creepy, with Desma not having her eyes yet.

I wiped Desma’s face because wow awful. I also just bought some soft pastels and a makeup brush to attempt to blush her and everything. I also re-strung her after  realizing I lost the magnets for her tail. Struggled for an hour or two to get her back together (she’s still pretty kicky, though) and I found the magnets stuck to a paperclip in my doll box.

Go figure.

I’ve been playing the game of finding what mass market doll clothes fit the Hujoo bodies best. Seems like some Barbie clothes are alright, though a little lose (they can easily be taken in or shortened). Monster High outfits are not at all. The Monster High dolls are way too slender. Stardoll clothes fit similar to Barbie, but I discovered the Stardoll outfit sets are much nicer and better priced. They’re about $8 for an outfit set, usually another piece of an outfit, and a couple accessories (and shoes she can’t wear). I bought two sets, one with a nice purple dress and black leotard and another with a top/dress outfit (what she’s wearing now) and a summery skirt. I hate the top with that skirt she had on now, though. It reads SWEET HRT CITY’ (Sweet Heart City), but since the ‘ea’ is a heart shape, so I keep reading it as SWEET HORT CITY’. I think Moxie girl stuff will fit her, as well, but I haven’t bought any to find out yet.

I bought some remnant fabric and some pretty lace to make some skirts with. The lace was by-the-yard and looked long enough to not have to do the song and dance of cutting out fabric and stuff to make clothing items. It’s longer than I thought, but that’s okay. Better more and  have extra than the opposite situation.

I also ordered my white Freya (Poe)! My mom was going to, but she couldn’t figure out the Paypal system, so she ended up sending me the money. I also got pair of high heel feet because I want Poe to be able to wear shoes and if she feet are in stockings/boots, they won’t be seen anyhow.

I don’t know when I’ll be able to get wigs for the girls. For Desma, I don’t mind a fur wig for the time being (she’s unkempt anyhow), but I want a nice wig for Poe and I want a blonde one and a purple one. So those’ll probably be purchases for sometime in the future.

I do want to find some reasonably priced green cat eyes, though. I can’t believe how much of a pain those have been.

So I coated Desma’s head with Testor’s today and decided to try screwing around with painting her face. This is totally not even serious, I’m doing a lot of practicing because, well, I’m both no good at painting and I’ve never done a faceup before!

I’m encountering the problem of shaking hands AND the fact that I can get the right side of her face to look good, but then doing the left is a nightmare. Same with my drawing. Right side of the drawing’s face always looks great. Left side looks completely awful.

But that’s what practice is for! I’m just screwing around with pencils and cheap acrylics right now, I haven’t attempted any blushing (though she’s going to need a lot, for what I want her to look like) because I don’t want to make a mess of pastels at the moment and I don’t have a large brush to do any blushing with. But I imagine it’ll help, visually, at least. The contrast of the light gray and black makes her look pretty cheap right now!

Also, the cats are the LEAST helpful halpers ever. Sam’s been laying there and flipping his tail about and Finnick was playing in my cup of water.

I came across a no-sew dress tutorial on DoA and I remembered that I found some gauzy fabric I had bought a few years ago that would be perfect for Des.

Since it was so think, I just did a quick and dirty cutting job (because Desma is not exactly concerned with hemming and looking presentable) and then layered over another piece of the fabric to the front. I threw it on over her pink Barbie dress and…she’s looking a bit more like herself! I pulled out a few jewelry things I have for some little props and I found a itsy bitsy key ring for her to wear as a necklace (it’s hard to see, but it’s in the first image).

Aaand, this is what I’ve been doing instead of reading the rest of my stuff to catch up on last week’s classwork. Academic motivation has been nill the last couple days.

I went out today and managed to find some of the basics I need for doing a faceup at Hobby Lobby!

  • Testor’s Dullcoat
  • 3pk Master’s Touch (3/0, 2/0, 0)
  • 18/0 Master’s Touch Brush
  • 10/0 Mater’s Touch Brush
  • Acrylic Paints

I also got some tiny craft triangle swabs, because I recall seeing someone mention using them for faceups and blending. They might not be necessary, so I’m just going to keep them in the package until I’m sure if I’ll need them or want to keep them. They were almost $5!

I was going to buy separate bottles of acrylics for Desma’s colors, but I ended up buying a cheap set of basic colors in the little tiny containers. I figure that’ll be okay to practice with before purchasing something nicer for faceups/blushing like Liquitex (which I may still have some of around the house!).

I also bought her a little Barbie dress. There was woefully little in the way of selection for doll clothing at Target. I remember when there used to be a TON. But I got her an incredibly out of character sparkly pink dress for $3. It fits well enough, but it rides up a bit around her chest and neck. Ah well.

When I got home, Deancat was intensely interested in her. The cats really haven’t noticed the presence of something new on my desk (they’re kind of dumb, admittedly), so Deancat was sniffing at her and rubbing his gums on her ears.

Hopefully Finnick doesn’t bother her. He likes chewing on things and chipped the tip of the beak off my resin cast crow skull. It’s full of his little teeth marks and I don’t want that to happen to my doll!
